Understanding Stress & Anxiety: Why CBD Helps Some People Find Calm

by Heather Wiskes

Stress and anxiety are often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. Stress is your body’s natural response to a challenge, while anxiety is the lingering feeling of worry or fear that can persist even after the stressful event has passed.

When you’re stressed, your brain activates your “fight or flight” response, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Your heart rate increases, muscles tighten, breathing becomes shallow, and your body prepares for action. While this response is essential for survival, chronic stress can keep your nervous system stuck in overdrive.

This is where the endocannabinoid system (ECS) comes in. The ECS helps regulate balance throughout the body—including mood, sleep, memory, pain perception, and the body’s response to stress. Researchers believe CBD supports this system by helping the body maintain homeostasis, or internal balance, rather than simply masking symptoms. Studies also suggest CBD may influence serotonin signaling, which plays an important role in mood and emotional well-being. While research is promising, it is still evolving.

THC may also help some individuals relax by activating cannabinoid receptors more directly. However, because THC is psychoactive, the ideal dose varies from person to person. In some people, especially at higher doses, THC can actually increase anxiety rather than reduce it. Finding the right product and dosage is key.

Cannabinoids aren’t the only tools available. Many people also find support from supplements such as ashwagandha, L-theanine, magnesium glycinate, lemon balm, passionflower, rhodiola, or GABA. Lifestyle habits—including regular exercise, quality sleep, mindfulness, and breathing exercises—can also make a meaningful difference.

There isn’t a single “best” solution for everyone. The most effective approach is the one that helps your body feel balanced. Whether that’s CBD, a low-dose THC product, herbal supplements, or a combination of healthy habits, discovering what works for you is part of the wellness journey.
