As the world braces for what some are calling the Covid second wave many in the medical and scientific communities are leaving no stone unturned for a cure. The leading cause of fatalities with the novel corona virus are due to the patient’s respiratory response to the aggressive virus; 70% of Covid-19 fatalities are respiratory failure.
Since the farm bill passed in 2018 CBD (cannabidiol a non-psychoactive compound found in Hemp and Cannabis strains) has gained momentum in the medical and science arenas for its apparent benefits for various aliments one of which is inflammation. There have also been studies testing CBD’s efficacy with bacteria and viruses. Though there is much research yet to be completed I believe we may be on the right path to treat inflammation caused by Covid-19..
In June is was announced the Cicaran Skerry, an assistant professor of Microbiology and immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, is leading a lab-based study to investigate CBD has an anti-viral effect on Covid-19 infected cells. This study follows work of Canadian researches from the University of Lethbridge that showed CBD could help block ACE2, or the molecule that Covid-19 uses to penetrate human cells and spread.The Canadian UofL non-peer-reviewed study was published in the Preprints journal. The Maryland-based study will attempt to further determine if CBD can reduce the activity of ACE2, and also if CBD could be used to help "protect against the excessive inflammatory responses to the virus associated with lung damage and death,” Skerry said in a statement
