Heart Health Month

Why do we observe American Heart Month every February?

Well, every year more than 600,000 Americans die from heart disease. The number one cause of deaths for most groups, heart disease affects all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and excessive alcohol use.

Do you know how to keep your heart healthy? You can take an active role in reducing your risk for heart disease by eating a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, and managing your cholesterol and blood pressure. This is a great chance to start some heart-healthy habits.

What can we do about it?

A few great tips to keep your new year's resolutions in check and your heart flowing.

1. Omega3 Fatty Acids - Fish dinners 2x/week or 1 gram fish oil once/week, or thru diet - walnuts, chia seeds, etc.

2. Reduce trans and saturated fats - deep fried products, preservatives, and artificial ingredients

3. Reduce Stress - Try meditation, read, take 'me' time, or a workout to help relieve built up stress and get the heart pumping

3. Physical Activity - walk, yoga, stairs instead of elevator at work, the littlest amount will help tremendously

4. Green Tea - Great for it's antioxidants and circulation enhancements

5. Diet - A healthy well balanced diet with lots of veggies and correct food pairings, ex. No proteins with carbs or dairy
