Let’s get to the root of Licorice Root! Licorice is a herbaceous legume native to the Middle East, Southeastern Europe and India. It’s probably not a surprise — licorice is one of the most widely used herbs in the world. It has a variety of uses, but often is found in teas & wellness items, sometimes as a natural mild sweetener or for its own soothing benefits. Keep an eye out — it is also sometimes spelled liquorice.

Ginger root comes in many forms. Whether fresh, dried, powdered, juiced, or in an extracted oil, it’s diversity allows it to be used in so many ways! Due to its natural oils, it’s easy to determine the unique taste and fragrance of ginger in many recipes. One of the main compounds in ginger is gingerol. Gingerol is high on the list for its medicinal properties. Historic and modern practices use it to soothe the stomach and support healthy digestion. We root for Ginger root!

What is widely used to help settle the stomach and freshen breath? You guessed it, Peppermint! 

Interestingly, peppermint is a hybrid for two different plants: water mint and spearmint. Refreshing and bright, this special has been used for thousands of years for its pleasant, mild and bright minty taste. 

It’s also rich in nutrients, and is a good source of vitamin A and antioxidants. It is a flowering perennial and can grow as tall as 35 inches tall. Researchers have found dried peppermint in pyramids, some dating back to 1,000 B.C.. Since those times, it has been used by many civilizations, in both culinary and medicinal settings. More modernly, in the 1700s, peppermint was widely cultivated in England, which further propelled its popularity and use. Peppermint has never been so cool!

With the aromatic compound “anethole”, (also found in anise and star anise) fennel has a similar aroma and taste, but it’s still unique in its own right. This flowering plant species in the carrot family is nutritionally dense. It’s rich in Vitamin C, calcium and iron. It is a perfect ingredient to add to our Digest Well, as its historic uses have been for support healthy bodily regularity, supporting healthy digestion, and generally the stomach feeling great.
